Sudha's SnackDear Brownscape Friends, I am happy to report that the South Asian International Film Festival on Oct. 7th was a success; my parents came to see the final product of what I spent a year and a half of my life on: Made in India? They were very impressed with the entire film and congratulated Deepti and I on our hard work. Surprisingly, my mom stood up and made an interesting comment- she thanked Deepti for making her finally understand the dilemmas of the Indian-American woman. What? How could this happen? I have spent 31 years of my life trying to convince Mom that I was not an alien because I did not want to go to temple, eat South Indian food for every meal, or be arranged to marry a man named Ravichandran. My adolescence was spent singing Handel’s Messiah every Christmas, eating McDonald’s, and trying desperately to not seem too “Indian”. Believe me, I am not proud of my past, but it is my past nonetheless. And now Mom totally understood what it is like to be culturally confused within a span of 60 minutes? All I can say is Deepti, we made a pretty damn good movie! May I suggest Made in India 2: Sudha’s Deranged Marriage? I also attended the Filmmaker’s Lunch sponsored by the SAIFF; this was quite an engaging event. The staff of SAIFF catered the lunch and had tables all around in the hopes that starving filmmakers like myself would eat and network. And that is exactly what I did; I ate a goat cheese omelet and talked about how filmmaking is becoming more and more brown every day. South Asian intelligencia were everywhere, talking about culture, art, and politics. If Woody Allen ate curry, this would be his scene. Anyway, my efforts to develop projects with Brownscape Productions continue- I am writing Browntown with Deepti and Alex Heyward; we hope to complete the scene breakdown by early November, and have the finished script by early 2007. Thanks for your loyalty and see you next issue!
